AJANKOHTAISTA
Over the long dark winter, it can sometimes
feel difficult to keep one’s spirits up
as you wait for the light and warmth of
spring and summer to arrive. This past
winter I did not have any trouble keeping
my spirits up and I think it was because
I was involved in what turned out to be
a fantastic mental health project. In honor
of Finland’s 100-year anniversary of
independence, I decided to put together
a slide show of 100 things AWC women
love about Finland.
I was not sure I would get 100 photos
submitted by members, so I also kept my
eye out for things I, myself, loved about
Finland. Everywhere I went, I would see
things with a new eye and snap a picture to
add to my collection. I shifted my perspective
from ruminating on the things I was
frustrated with to paying deliberate attention
to the things I loved about Finland.
The science on mental well-being tells
us that our brains will shine a spotlight
on what we focus on and consequently
this will affect our mood and even our
health. Focus on the negative and stress
hormones will rise with related negative
consequences. Since I spent months shining
my spotlight on all the good I could
find everywhere, indeed I noticed that the
winter slipped away with my mood being
lighter than I can ever recall.
What do we love about Finland? Nature
was definitely number one. I received so
many breathtaking photos of wide-open
vistas of lakes, the sea, forests, sunsets,
but also pictures of looking at the beauty
of nature in the minutia. Icicles dripping
against the backdrop of a clear azure sky.
Flowers thriving in granite crevices along
the coast. When we stop to look at all the
beauty that Finland has to offer, large and
small, we feel awed and amazed and fall
in love with Finland and its nature over
and over again.
While shots of nature in all its beauty
did account for a large percentage of the
photos, there were also more symbolic
and literal images too. I received photos
of neuvola, dog parks, sailboats, schools,
Nordic walking, community clean up days,
the Koff tram, ice swimming, rug washing
in the sea, buildings and churches.
Many pictures of the AWC women
spending time together were sent in too,
such as a group photo of a meeting with
our former ambassador, a book club meeting,
celebrations of holidays and birthdays
together. Photos were submitted
of festivals and events such as Vanhojen
tanssit, Penkkarit, Slush, Tall Ships Races,
Lux, Christmas, Independence Day, Palm
Sunday and Midsummer. I was sent photos
of Finnish Santa Claus, Runeberg cakes,
Christmas tarts, crayfish parties and
wool socks. My goal of 100 photos was
well exceeded.
There is so much to love about Finland.
If we take the time to notice, really
notice, then we will be left with peace in
our hearts and minds. Congratulations on
100 years Finland-with much love!
