FINLANDS SJÖFART J SUOMEN MERENKULKU 33
Fatigue poster, designed to be displayed on all
vessels.
Fatigue was not the only item on the forum’s
agenda, and a traditional ‘safety pause’ was held to
allow open, confidential sharing of experience.
This followed insightful presentations from the
MCA and the Offshore Wind Accelerator pro-gramme,
covering the important questions of how
new codes will affect day-to-day operations for
crews, and how new Offshore Asset boat landings
can be optimised and standardised to improve
safety.
Taking the event as a whole, it was rewarding to
see action now being taken on concerns raised at
the previous forum. The importance of tackling
issues arising from fatigue cannot be overstated,
and we are content to see progress on safety being
made, and grateful to the collaborative effort from
both windfarm and vessel operators that enables
such steps.
Moving forwards, the Offshore Wind Safety
Forum is well set to build on its present successes.
NWA secretary Mark Ranson gave a presentation
on 2016-2017 workboat safety statistics, a resource
which is now able to build on four years of data and
thus show significant trends in workboat safety
issues. This will allow future Safety Forums to
effectively source key discussion subjects and
opportunities, honing the agenda to tackle the most
pressing issues going forward.
In the meantime, maintaining a consistent
ongoing dialogue between offshore wind develop-ers,
vessel operators, masters and crews will
remain vital in ensuring we can safely benefit from
the huge opportunities inherent in the rapidly
growing sector. •

There’s been quite a buzz around the new
Women in Maritime Charter this year, with
high hopes that this will finally lead to a
breakthrough in the numbers of women
entering the UK shipping industry. SARAH
