The program will offer insight into U.S. society by providing
a deeper understanding of the electoral process and
politics in the United States. The program will also include
exposure to how stakeholders influence elections and to
what the key political issues are for Americans in the middle
(and in the heart) of the country.
The program is organized in co-operation with Suomi-Amerikka Yhdistysten Liitto
SAM and the Cleveland Council on World Affairs, who is experienced in hosting
election-related exchange programs with the U.S. Department of State. Participants
will be able to compare/contrast U.S. and Finnish systems of government.
As a swing state that has chosen the presidential winner in every election since
1960, Ohio will be a key state to watch in the 2020 election cycle. An exchange in
Cleveland, a Midwest city along America´s Great Lakes, will allow participants
to view the U.S. electoral process from the perspective of a city and state with a
dynamic political history, a rich culture scene and an interesting legacy as one of
the old manufacturing centers of America.
Based on the political debates to date, we anticipate that the following will be “hot
topics” in politics next November: immigration, healthcare, economic inequality,
gun control, and climate change. Other issues would include education, money in
politics, economy/monetary policy, and foreign affairs.
