Do words matter in these times of fake news?
In the modern world, it appears that nothing
can be trusted. We are constantly brainwashed
by a myriad of falsified information,
over-exaggerated facts and prejudiced
opinions. What was once the source of
trust-worthy reports on happenings around
us, is now a creator of hazardous fake news.
How can we separate truth from deceit? Do
words even matter anymore?
In order to comprehend the impact of
news, we must first assess the vitality of
words. Words can be simple, innocent and
truthful, but worlds can also be manipulative,
horrifying and hurtful. Be it black
words on white paper or varying soundwaves
crossing through the air, words are
more than often overlooked and underrated.
Yet, they are astonishingly powerful, they
even behold the ability to transform lives,
for better or for worse. Infinite good can be
created through words, but likewise just as
much evil can be crafted.
The media recognizes this power idiosyncratic
to words. However, instead
of utilizing it to create the much needed
change in our world, it adds to the blazing
flames of grief, anger and blame through
fake news. Anything that catches the eye is

Tampereen klassillisen lukion luonnontieteellisellä
linjalla opiskellut Janet Li,
18, elää kiireistä kevättä. Vaikka lukion
päättäminen ja ylioppilaslakin saaminen
ovat iso juttu, Janetin ajatukset ovat tällä
hetkellä (14.5.) kahden päivän päässä
olevassa lääketieteellisen pääsykokeessa.
– Vierailimme vuosia sitten pienessä
kylässä vanhempieni kotimaassa Kiinassa,
jossa oli erittäin huonot olot. Oikeastaan
siinä hetkessä päätin, että minusta
tulee lääkäri. Haluan auttaa minua
huonommassa asemassa olevia ihmisiä,
kertoo Janet Li.
SAM:n englanninkieliseen kirjoituskilpailuun
Li päätti osallistua vuoden
mietinnän jälkeen. Hän oli yllättynyt ja
ilahtunut kuullessaan englanninopettajaltaan
Annukka Suoniolta voittaneensa.
– Kun näin viisi otsikkovaihtoehtoa,
mietin pitkään mistä kirjoittaisin.
Otsikoksi valikoitui valeuutiset, koska
halusin kirjoittaa sanojen merkityksestä
ja tärkeydestä. Sanoilla on väliä, niitä ei
pidä käyttää väärin.
– On hienoa saada tunnustusta englanninkielen
taidostani sekä kuulla, että
kirjoitelmastasi pidettiin.
Yhdysvallat on Janet Li’lle tuttu lähinnä
sosiaalisesti mediasta.
– Amerikkalaisuuden vaikutus näkyy
laajasti populaarikulttuurissa, trendeissä,
vaatteissa, meikeissä.
– En tiedä vielä mihin Icelandairin
monesta Amerikan kohteesta lennän,
matkaseuraksi aion pyytää ystäväni. Isot
itärannikon kaupungit, kuten New York
ja Miami, kiinnostavat ainakin.

catastrophic and far-reaching impacts it
may have. The media’s choice of words
are unforgiving, exaggerated and serve a
subjective purpose concealed from the average
observer. Nonetheless, we can use
these very words for fight back. Through
careful scrutiny, we can grasp the threads
that don’t add up, differentiate betweeen
falsehood and truth, as well as prevent lies
from determing our opinions.
Words do matter. In fact, they behold a
meaning that transcends the limited capacity
of human comprehension. Through
feeding us lie after lie disguised as objective
news, the media has chosen to utilize this
powerful tool as a means to gain publicity
at the expense of innocent lives, as well as
weaken hope and kindess among the human
population instead of strenghtening it.
However, it is up to us to decide how much
power we allow these particular dangerous
words. Let us be criticial during these times
of fake news and combat this wrongfulness
through our own voices, our own words. It is
precisely at times like these that we need to
employ the power of words to bring about
positive changes.
