The success story of Lahti as a frontrunner
in environmental expertise goes back to the
restoration of Lake Vesijärvi in the 1980s.
 Lahti is
 a bold green
 city
Lahti has an ambitious goal: to
make Finland known as a pioneer
of zero emissions and a circular
 economy society. We recycle
 natural resources, materials and
 products effectively and generate
 new value with technology and
 intelligence. We want consumption
 to be sustainable and greenhouse
gas emissions to be near zero.
Today 97 % of household waste is recovered.
The Kujala waste management centre is
 Finland’s most important business and
innovation centre in the recycling industry
 – and also a popular location for site visits.
We have cut our use of fossil fuels by nearly
50 %, despite the fact that we are a Nordic
city with a cold climate and no energy
sources of our own. We have introduced a
public transportation with a bus fleet with
 the lowest emissions in Finland.
Targets for tomorrow: We make cycling,
 walking and public transportation attractive
 and feasible through personal emissions
trading. We become a climate-neutral city
and move to zero-waste circular economy.
The Lahti region is a popular destination for
nature-based tourism since we protect our
nature, look after our rivers and lakes and
 promote sustainable tourism.
Lahti is competing for the European Green
 Capital 2021 award.
