Tackle on-site labor shortages
with off -site manufacturing
The construction industry has recently faced serious global
labor shortages. The most obvious reason is of course
COVID-19 and its implications – not only the restrictions on
construction sites, but also the restrictions on immigration.
It seems that the pandemic may have been used as a handy
tool to protect the home markets as well.
But we need to keep building.
How do we do that despite
the lack of workforce?
1. Use precast and other modular
building methods such as mass
timber to lower the on-site
workforce requirements.
2. Manufacture components in a
controlled factory environment for
better quality. It’s also worth noting
that the labor needed in precast
manufacturing is only a fraction of
what would be needed to build the
same structure on site – think about
productivity!
